Darren drove Hope’s wagon, wishing she’d sit beside him, but she was doing her duty and walking with the boys. The two youngest were already back in the wagon. But Kurt and Kevin stayed beside her.

At least, they weren’t running off. Then again, there was no snow, yet. Although, he believed Windy was right. He could smell it, see that the clouds were full carrying a pinkish color. Soon the snow would begin falling.

Windy rode to him and threw him a rope. “Tie this off on your wagon. I have the other end tied to the back of the Rodgers’ wagon. I figure to keep every two wagons tied together just in case.”

“Good idea. How long before it snows?”

The old scout stared at the sky and then licked a finger and held it up. “I figure maybe within the hour. Temperature is cold enough. There’s a good clump of trees maybe three hours away. I’d like it if the wagons could make it that far. Crockett isn’t sure we can. But it’d offer us some shelter.” Windy gave him a salute and rode to the wagon behind.

Hope, Kevin, and Kurt slowed.

Darren looked at them and felt sorry for those walking. He called out to her. “You doing all right?”

She shook her head. “Just cold. But we’re pioneers, aren’t we boys?”

The two tried their best to smile.

“Want a blanket?”

Hope smiled. “Yes, that would be wonderful. Two of them.”

Darren rummaged behind the seat and felt for the blankets. He tossed one to Hope, waited until she had it around her, and then tossed her the other one. She helped the two boys secure it around them.

“Thanks, we better catch up to the boy’s wagon. See you at lunch, that is if we stop. I think Windy wants us to go on until we get to some shelter.” She smiled at him.

Warmth surged through Darren. He didn’t need a blanket. Only Hope. The farther he got from his parents, the surer he was that Hope was the girl for him. He felt the locket in his pocket. Hope was the one he wanted to give it to. He thought about the jeweler and his wife. Would his mother really mind so if he married a woman with a different heritage?

“I hope you are all safe and in Norway. Ma, I found a girl you’d love. Mostly. Wish I could talk to you.” He grimaced as loneliness settled over him. He was alone. Except for Hope, and he had no ties with her.

Suddenly, he questioned his decision to stay. Why hadn’t he gone with his family? The wind howled without an answer, and the cold air vied with the chill of being alone. He popped himself on the head.

“Darren, you’re going to Oregon. A land of lush grass and good farmland. The place where dreams come true.” He glanced at Hope. “And I’m not alone. Somehow, I’m going to get Hope to want me. No more holding out for a blonde. She’s the one for me.
